The Calote Esférica Cultural Association aims to promote the intersection and confluence of various artistic areas with a particular focus on experimentation and research through art in its multiple aspects and design, seeking and promoting the development of transdisciplinarity.
It is intended that the products resulting from laboratory activity constitute active contributions to the heritage cultural, through its sharing in the formats of shows, editing, publication, exhibition, events and exhibitions.
The association has been operating since 2009.
Calote Esférica currently comprises:
CARLOS AZEREDO MESQUITA (1988, Porto) is a visual artist and performance maker.
His first performance, “Diet Plan for the Western Man”, premiered at KW Berlin, as part of the Berlin Biennale in 2018, and was shown at Teatro Municipal do Porto. With Luísa Saraiva he co-created "I know it when I see it", in 2019, which premiered at Festival Circular, in Vila do Conde, Portugal, with shows in Essen, Germany. How following creating, “Über Alles”, premiered in 2021 at MAAT, in Lisbon, as part of BoCA Biennial, and at Teatro Municipal do Porto. He’s currently working on “The Complete National Anthems of the World”, a 10-hour long durational performance due to premiere in December 2023 at Sismógrafo, in Porto. In parallel, he’s been coordinating “Que Classe” (“How classy”), an investigation in sociology about access to a career in the arts.
As a visual artist, he’s been awarded the BES Revelation Award (Portugal), and the Startpoint Prize (Czechia). He was an artist in residence at the Lisbon Triennale of Architecture '13 and the Galeria Panal 361 in Buenos Aires. His work has been exhibited both solo and in group shows, as venues such as the Serralves Museum, and the Municipal Gallery of Porto, the MAAT in Lisbon and Baginsky Gallery, as part of “PhotoIreland” in Dublin, at the Untitled Gallery @ Marwen in Chicago, at the Vitrine Gallery in Weimar, and at Faur Zsófi Gallery in Budapeste. Carlos é representado pela Kubik Gallery (Porto/São Paulo).
He holds a degree in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, and studied photography at MOME Moholy-Nagy University of Arts in Budapest.
ISABEL DUARTE (she/her) is a graphic designer and researcher. She is currently developing a PhD in Design History at the University of Brighton, United Kingdom. In 2021 she cocurated the exhibition Errata: a feminist revision of Portuguese graphic design history, and in parallel, Isabel develops the Errata podcast, documenting and reflecting on issues facing women designers in Portugal through conversations with thinkers, curators, historians and designers about their experiences and work.
LUÍSA SARAIVA was born in Porto, is a choreographer and dancer. Studied Psychology at the University of Porto and Dance at the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen. In her choreographic practice she uses a transdisciplinary approach to investigate movement, language and sound. In 2018 she received the Ground Support NRW award with the piece A CONCERT, together with Lea Letzel. In 2019 she was part of the danceWEB program and in the 2019/2020 season she was a resident choreographer at K3 | Tanzplan Hamburg. As a curator, she worked with the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Porto Municipal Gallery in interdisciplinary formats.
